A healthy digestive system is essential for optimal well-being. A compromised gut will negatively affect your immune system, mental health & your skin. Most people are surprised to know that there are more bacterial cells in your gut than there are human cells in your entire body. You wouldn’t exist without your gut bacteria and your overall level of health is completely dependent on your digestion and microbiome (aka healthy bacteria in your digestive tract). There so many nerve endings and neurotransmitters in the digestive system that it has even earned the title of “the second brain”. Did you know that 95% of your body’s serotonin, one of the most important chemicals for maintaining positive mood, is made during digestion? To assess if your digestive system is functioning properly an initial digestive health appointment will look at how well your body is breaking down & absorbing nutrients and determine the root cause of your gas, bloating, mental health and bowel symptoms to bring your digestive system back into balance.
Many patients coming to visit my practice present with symptoms of heartburn, or GERD. This condition happens when food and stomach acid moves up the esophagus, instead of down through the stomach. It is extremely uncomfortable and can even be a risk factor for cancers of the digestive system. At your appointment we will determine your heartburn food triggers (via symptom tracking or lab testing) and give you strategies & treatment options to help reduce pain and actually heal the gut instead of just masking your pain symptoms.
Gas & Bloating
Certain foods may be triggering your uncomfortable, and often embarrassing digestive symptoms. I use blood tests and an in-depth analysis of symptoms to determine which foods are causing your issues. Once aggravating foods have been identified I will support you through the process of removing these foods from the diet for a certain period of time and facilitating gut healing.
Constipation & Diarrhea
IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) is a diagnosis of exclusion, meaning that all of the common causes of your bowel symptoms have been ruled out and now your doctor has no idea what’s wrong with you. Naturopathic medicine will help you get to the bottom of what’s really causing your bowel changes, whether it be food sensitivities, stress, mechanical dysfunction or bacterial imbalance. You will see relief from natural therapies that aim to restore bowel function because they address the underlying reason for your symptoms and help to restore your digestive system.
