Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is the use of biologically identical hormones for the purpose of replenishing low hormone levels in the body. BHRT is used most commonly to treat peri- and post-menopausal women in order to restore estrogen and progesterone levels and relieve symptoms associated with menopause.
Conventional hormone replacement (the kind typically prescribed by your MD) is made from synthetic sources and has repeatedly proven to be dangerous to women. Studies show that women that have been treated with conventional HRT are at greater risk of developing heart attacks, strokes, breast cancer and blood clots. The problem with conventional HRT is that it is made from synthetic chemicals that our bodies do not recognize as ‘real’ hormones. We are therefore, unable to properly process these synthetic hormones leading to a buildup of harmful hormonal byproducts.
Bioidentical hormones are a safe and effective alternative to conventional HRT because they are identical to your own hormones. Bioidentical hormones work because they easily bind to your receptors like endogenous estrogen and progesterone and are broken down in exactly the same manner as real hormones. Researchers have concluded that bioidentical hormones are safer and more efficacious than conventional HRT and are an excellent option for relieving hot flashes, vaginal dryness, low libido and other menopausal symptoms.
